CODE OF CONDUCT

This Code of Conduct applies to all participants in the Czech Antarctic Research Programme (CARP), including expedition members, officers, and any guests involved in program-related activities

Commitment to a Safe and Respectful Environment

CARP is dedicated to providing productive, enjoyable, and safe experiences across its expeditions, meetings, conferences, workshops, and any other events. We aim for an environment of collegiality and mutual respect, recognizing the diversity of nationality, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, appearance, and religion.

By attending CARP activities (including extracurricular events organized by CARP), all individuals agree to:

  1. Treat others with respect,
  2. Not engage in discrimination, intimidation, harassment, or abuse—whether at official events or associated social gatherings.

CARP discourages any relationship that may create a perception of impropriety.
CARP does not tolerate behavior that threatens a person’s career, well-being, or safety.
CARP welcomes members to share observations or experiences that are unsettling or inappropriate.
CARP affirms it will take all concerns seriously.

Prohibited Behaviors

CARP does not tolerate specific types of conduct during CARP activities. Violations may lead to consequences as determined by CARP and/or national authorities.

Prohibited behaviors include, but are not limited to:

  • Actual or implied threats of physical harm,
  • Persistent, unwelcome solicitation of emotional or physical intimacy—especially if tied to implied professional harm,
  • Intimidating, abusive, derogatory, or demeaning speech or actions,
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following,
  • Unauthorized and unwanted photography or recording,
  • Use of social media to intimidate, abuse, or demean,
  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events,
  • Inappropriate physical contact or unwelcome sexual attention,
  • Encouraging or advocating any of the above behaviors.

Additionally, the CARP opposes any sexual misconduct involving authority figures (e.g., officers, members, expedition leaders) and junior attendees, such as students. Such relationships must remain professional. Abuse or exploitation is not tolerated.
We also acknowledge the harm to observers of prohibited behaviors and affirm their right to file a complaint following the same procedures as direct targets.

Alignment with Human Rights

We endorse and uphold the principles stated in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Procedure for Code of Conduct Breaches at CARP Events

CARP is dedicated to maintaining a collaborative, open, safe, equitable, and inclusive environment at all events—especially expeditions to Antarctica. This Code of Conduct reflects the values we expect everyone to uphold. The following points outline how allegations of a breach will be handled:

  1. Reporting: Anyone witnessing or experiencing a violation may submit a complaint to the designated contact or authority.
  2. Confidentiality: All reports are handled with discretion and respect for privacy.
  3. Review Process: Appropriate representatives will review and investigate allegations promptly and impartially.
  4. Outcome: Depending on the severity, outcomes may include warnings, removal from events, or notification to relevant authorities or institutions.

By participating in CARP activities, all attendees commit to these principles and procedures, ensuring we support an environment where every person is welcomed, safe, and respected.
